Behind the news

  • The "Helping Hand" seating project for Forster Girl Guides in Lake Street, Forster is now completed with the new seating in place. We have donated all materials and labour towards this project, as part of our contribution to the community. Below is a photo of the area before we started:

  • We had a recent text response on behalf of the Girl Guides along the following lines....." Thanks...seats are high enough for our mower guy to whipper snip around and underneath. The tapered ends are a great safety feature and secure fixing with concrete pads will make the seats a safer option for our girls. Please give our thanks and appreciation to all the team involved from the Men's Shed. The photo (below) is on completion of the project:

  • George Wilson has reported further developments of a positive nature with regard to the DA submission to Council. This involves his work on the building plans and assistance from a new member, Graham regarding an Environmental impact study. Developments continue with recent liaison between George and Ashley Carlson and Peter Brabant of MCC.

VALE - Terry Jobson  4th Oct 1942 - 30th March 2019

Terry Jobson was around for as long as I have been at the shed. He was the Secretary of Wallis Lake Men's Shed, when I first joined and continued as such until he was forced to stand aside due to failing heath. He will be missed at the Men's Shed, as he will also be missed as a volunteer at Marine Rescue. Terry was from Glen Innes, NSW and it was there that he attended high school. He worked and studied at the Australian Defence Force. He was a former WO in the army. More particularly, Terry was a former OPCP Sergeant - Gun Sergeant Battery Guide in 4th Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery.

Terry's funeral was held at the St Nicholas Chapel Tuncurry Anglican Church on Friday 5th April, 2019, prior to internment in the Tuncurry Cemetery. A number of members of the Forster Tuncurry Men's Shed attended and acted as a guard of honour.  The service was conducted by Padre Daryll Moran. Terry will be sadly missed at the Men's Shed.

Terry Jobson - RIP

Do you need a jab from the Doctor????

Last week I received a text message from my Local GP's surgery. I was a bit annoyed about the invasion of my privacy, but phoned them back to find out just why they texted me about this health message. The message was to tell me that I was able to receive a free flu vaccination as well as one for shingles. So I arranged a time and date for the flu jab, and will make an appointment on that day for the shingles needle. It seems they cannot be done on the same day. I receive an email each month from the Govt as i'm a Seniors Card holder. I just looked at a website about the dangers of shingles to seniors. I'm glad I made the decision to get vaccinated, and I've had a flu jab each year for about 5yrs. Shingles is something you do not want to get. Have a think about it, shedders. Ed.

WORK PLACE SAFETY

The  sub - committee continues with it's great work, and as part of our due-diligence program, there will soon be a list of WH&S Committee members in the top right hand corner of the big white board, near Cliffy's bench. This will tell you who is "IN" and who is "OUT". Get used to taking a glance to see who is best to notify, if there is an incident.

The following is an excerpt delevered at an AMSA Conference in Newcastle a couple of years back. It relates to perecived threats to Men's Sheds:

Threat 9 - Inadequate insurance

Adequate insurance is vital to the ongoing sustainability of Sheds or there is a risk that, following a misadventure, the Shed will be financially disadvantaged and/or close down following a potential court case.

We confirm that FTMS's insurance is in line with the AMSA Group Insurance that is available. We have adopted that model. It is designed specifically for Men's Sheds.
